IUI(Intrauterine Insemination) Treatment
What is IUI Treatment?
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is one of the most straightforward forms of assisted fertility treatments, the goal of which is to increase the number of sperm that reach and fertilise the egg on their own. It involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilisation.
IUI is often done in conjunction with ovulation-stimulating drugs. This medical procedure can be performed using the husband’s sperm or donor sperm. Before this procedure, the woman should be evaluated for any hormonal imbalance, infection or any structural problems.
When is IUI done:
- Ejaculation dysfunction.
- Hostile cervical mucus
- Unexplained infertility
- If treatment with fertility drugs alone is not successful
- If a sperm donor is being used
- If sexual pain makes intercourse not possible
Steps of IUI
A sperm sample will be required by the laboratory several hours before insemination. The sperm is prepared by selecting those with the best motility for the procedure. To choose the correct sperm, the motile sperm is separated from the immotile in a centrifuge.
On the day of the planned insemination, the husband/ partner provides a semen sample. A concentrated preparation of motile sperm is extracted from the semen sample in the laboratory. The sperm preparation is placed into the uterine cavity by the doctor/ fertility nurse by means of a fine catheter inserted through the cervix. In general, IUI is a painless procedure, which takes only a few minutes.
